Autumn 2024 Study Abroad student from Denison University

Granville, United States of America

I am Oscar and I am studying abroad from the United States of America. I am a communication major with a concentration in Organisational Studies. Here is my story of Staying in Sydney.

I have had a great time this past semester in Australia. I have learned so much about the country and have gotten to try some many different things. If I had to describe my time in Sydney in one word, I would say interesting. I have been able to explore Sydney and the surrounding areas with ease and while having fun at the same time.

One of my favorite spots in Sydney must be the zoo, as Australia has so many animals that are only native here. My personal favorite had to be the Koala’s as they are a funny species that sleeps around 20 hours per day, something I can relate to. Getting to and from the zoo is an adventure on its own as I took a car over the Sydney Harbour Bridge there and then the ferry back through Sydney Harbor. While the Zoo has been my favorite location, another area I really enjoy is Bondi Beach. I like Bondi Beach for its many different views and shops, and the Bondi Icebergs Club is a spot I highly recommend visiting.

One thing that sets my experience apart from most experiences here is my work. Early in the semester, I joined the club basketball group. I would meet Will there who would offer me a job commentating games for the men’s and women’s UBL teams. At my home university in the United States, I work as a sports broadcaster. Will, who is the media manager for both team and one of the assistant coaches, asked me to do this while also helping him manage the club basketball meetups so they are more organized. While I did not intend on working in Australia, it has become one of the highlights of my trip as I have gotten to see many great games and to hang out with the teams.

My recommendation for Future Students is to get involved with the various UTS clubs. I am a member of the basketball, skinning, surfing, and golfing clubs. These clubs have given me an opportunity to meet local people and explore Sydney. I hope for the students who are considering studying in Sydney that they choose to come here as it is the experience of a lifetime and something they should not miss out on.
